Responding to COVID-19
We are here to help during this challenging time and continue to perform on-site assessments. The health and safety of our field engineers is a top priority, so specific conditions must be met before an assessment can be scheduled. Please contact us for more information.
What is site assessment?
Field evaluation is an evaluation process that evaluates a product against applicable product safety standards for its specific use and location when the product has not yet been certified by a jurisdiction (AHJ), owner, or other regulatory authority. The evaluation process includes construction acceptance, assembly, and limited nondestructive testing for component use.
Requirements and standards
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that all electrical equipment used in the workplace be "certified," or undergo a thorough and thorough evaluation prior to use (29 CFR 1910.303 and 1910.399). In addition, many city, national, state, and provincial regulations require the certification or evaluation of gas and electrical products in buildings. UL Solutions On-site assessment is a method recognized by local code authorities to achieve the required assessment. UL Solutions' field evaluation program complies with ANSI/NFPA 790 and ANSI/NFPA 791 requirements for competency and field evaluation procedures.
Evaluation process
On-site assessments at specific locations help regulators determine product compliance and thus approve installation. UL Solutions' evaluation process includes documentation reviews, visual and mechanical inspections, and installation suitability assessments against adopted installation specifications, such as the National Electrical Code (NEC), applicable tests, and engineering reports. Anyone involved in a product can apply for UL Solutions' on-site evaluation services, including business owners, manufacturers and contractors.
Evaluate product labels on site
If the product meets the applicable requirements, the UL Solutions Field evaluation product label can be immediately applied to the product. If the product does not meet the requirements, UL Solutions will provide a detailed preliminary assessment results report that describes each issue and the applicable standard reference.
The UL Solutions Field Evaluation Program has been accredited by the International Certification Service (IAS) body (Identification number FEB-107) for all categories of electrical products identified in NFPA 790.
